Summary, etc. Abstract
Mobile learning is increasingly popular, with students using ICT devices and apps for education. This action research utilizing one group pre-test post-test design aimed to determine the effect of integrating the SCIEON mobile application as an enhancement material in teaching Earth Science. The study also gathered data on learners' perceptions of this integration. Furthermore, the mobile app was evaluated by one IT expert, five teachers, and ten students regarding its external quality and usability. Fifty-two (52) grade 11 learners were purposefully selected as participants for the study. Data were collected using an adapted Mobile Application Form from ISO 9126, along with a duly validated researcher-made Earth Science proficiency test and a semi-structured interview guide. The data were analyzed using mean, Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and thematic analysis. The results showed that the SCIEON Mobile App was acceptable in terms of its external quality and perfectly acceptable for its usability. Additionally, there was a notable improvement in learners' proficiency based on their pre-test and post-test scores. This demonstrated a significant difference in learners' proficiency levels before and after exposure to the SCIEON Mobile App. Furthermore, learners found the app engaging, helpful, simple, and easy. The SCIEON Mobile App serves its purpose to help teachers explain Earth Science concepts effectively. Further research is recommended for an in-depth study of the developed mobile apps and to create additional mobile learning applications for relevant subjects.
Keywords: mobile applications, mobile learning, enhancement material, science proficiency, innovations
