Abstract<br/> This study explored the lived experiences of gay adults in a rural area who use online dating applications. Using a qualitative phenomenological design, the research focused on motivations in using online dating apps, challenges they encounter, and how these platforms affect their emotional, social, and sexual well-being. Eight self-identified gay adults aged 18 years and above, who had used online dating applications for at least one month within the past year in Antique, participated in in-depth, semi-structured interviews. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed four major themes that capture the core of participants' online dating experiences. First, online dating apps were used to meet relational needs, explore identity and intimacy, pass time or seek entertainment, and access financial support. Second, participants demonstrated strong awareness of online risks, particularly regarding physical safety, financial exploitation, anonymity, and the avoidance of dating within their local communities. Third, emotional consequences emerged, including experiences of emotional vulnerability and the intentional setting of emotional boundaries. Fourth, participants emphasized sexual health awareness and prevention, highlighting preventive practices and knowledge of sexually transmitted infections and diseases. Overall, the study shows that online dating applications function as both enabling and challenging spaces for gay adults in socially restrictive rural communities. While these platforms provide opportunities for connection, autonomy, and self-expression, they also expose users to emotional risks and safety concerns. The findings underscore the need for culturally responsive mental health services, inclusive digital safety education, and LGBTQ+-affirming sexual health programs tailored to rural contexts.<br/><br/>Keywords: online dating apps, gay adults, lived experiences, LGBTQ+, motivations |
