xv ; 116 p. cm Abstract This study aimed to find out the problems, attitudes and challenges in the road widening implementation in Panay Island. It specifically tried to determine the problems brought about by and the attitudes towards road widening implementation among affected households when taken as an entire group and when grouped according to location and extent of damage, and whether there were significant differences therein. Furthermore, it sought to determine the challenges faced by DPWH personnel in implementing road widening project and whether or not these challenges were related to the problems and attitude of the affected households. Employing the descriptive quantitative-qualitative approach, this study used a one-shot survey method using researcher-made questionnaires on 1,280 affected households and 102 DPWH personnel and the Focused Group Discussion (FGD) of 10 key informants from the affected households and five DPWH personnel to further validate the quantitative results. Analysis involved the use of descriptive and inferential statistical tools with the help of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS)Program for Windows, v. 17.0. Findings of the study indicated that households in Panay Island considered the problem brought about by the implementation of road widening as Serious when taken as an entire group. When classified as to location, households who were adjacent to the road widening project site considered the problems brought about by implementation of road widening as Very serious while those households who were near and far from to the road widening project site considered the problems brought about by implementation of road widening as Serious. As to extent of damage, households who experienced major damage considered the problems brought about by implementation of road widening as Very serious while households who experienced minor damage and no damage considered the problems brought about by implementation of road widening as Serious. In addition, the attitude of households towards the implementation of road widening project was Favorable when taken as an entire group and when they were categorized as to location and extent of damage. Furthermore, the DPWH personnel find the challenges in implementing road widening project as Challenging. Moreover, significant difference was found in the problems brought about by and attitude towards the implementation of road widening project among the households when they were categorized as to location and extent of damage. Finally, no significant relationship existed between problems and challenges and attitude and challenges in the implementation of road widening project. It was concluded that road widening implementation brought about serious problems to affected residents but their attitude was favorable towards it because of the development and progress it brings in return. DPWH personnel faced the implementation of road widening projects as challenging. It was further concluded that affected households adjacent to the project and those who experienced major damage have more serious problems and less favorable attitude towards road widening projects compared to those near and far from it and experienced lesser damage. Recommendations include consultation before implementation be conducted, as well as extensive education and information campaign especially to residents directly affected by the project. Jerry O.
