Abstract 

TVL teachers play a crucial role in navigating challenges and maximizing opportunities for student learning and skills development. This descriptive study aimed to assess the teaching competence of TVL teachers in a national high school in a School Division in Antique as basis for program enhancement. The respondents were all the 40 teachers from different strand of the TVL department of the school. Data were gathered using the Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers (PPST) as stipulated in DO No. 42, s. 2017 of the Department of Education.

Statistical tests used to interpret the data are the frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test for Independent Samples, and One-way ANOVA. All statistical computations were done through the Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS) Software, version 26.0 set at 0.05 level of significance at two-tailed test.

Findings showed that the level of teaching competence of TVL teachers as an entire group and in terms of learning environment and personal growth and professional development is ""very high"", while the other five domains which include content knowledge and pedagogy. diversity of learners, curriculum and planning, assessment and reporting and community linkages and professional engagement is ""high"". All seven domains of the PPST are ""high"" in the identified variables, except as to length of teaching experience where respondents who have short years of experience and as to the level of national certificate (NC), where those who hold NC 3 both have ""very high"" levels of teaching competence.

Significant differences in teaching competence of TVL teachers exist in learning environment and diversity of learners as to age, and in diversity of learners as to sex. All the other identified variables did not influence the teaching competence of TVL teachers in other domains of the Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers (PPST).

The researcher identified specific areas under the different domains where TVL teachers need further training. A skill enhancement plan in the dimensions of learning environment and diversity of learners was proposed by the researcher.

The study concluded that teachers handling TVL subjects are highly proficient and at times can even be labeled as distinguished professionals. They can consistently display a high level of performance in their teaching practice and are competent practitioners who can even mentor and work collegially with other teachers. It is recommended that DepEd officials and education policy makers may consider the revitalization of the TVL Education Program to ensure that it remains significant and aligned with the purposes and needs of society.
