    <subfield code="a">Abstract

The implementation of the Enhanced K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum in the Philippine education system brought drastic changes in the entire education sector of the country. Moreover, the introduction of the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs) within the educational framework of the Department of Education further forged its utilization within classroom instruction and teaching. However questions emerged on the appropriateness and alignment of learning activities and assessment tools with the MELCs. This qualitative research study investigated the alignment of the MELCs for the subject Reading and Writing Skills RWS) in four public senior high schools in the Division of City of San Pedro, Laguna. Five public senior high school teachers handling RWS participated in the study. Document analysis was conducted using the learning plans of the teacher-participants to investigate whether the learning activities and assessment tools employed by the participants in their learning plans were aligned or not with the MELCs for the subject RWS. Results of the study revealed that majority of the learning activities and assessment tools were aligned with the MELCs for RWS. This implies that English language teachers are aware of the importance of providing learning activities and assessment tools that meet the necessary obiectives of the MELCs for RWS. Also teachers are focused on achieving students' progress and development in language learning. It is highly recommended, though, that further studies must be conducted to explore on the long-term efficacy of the learning activities and assessments used in English language classrooms.
