Abstract
The school is never exempted to disasters be it natural or man-made. As climate change brings drastic effects to people, the school with its mandate to educate and effect change in the minds of learners is a major institution in relation to disaster preparedness and response measures.
This descriptive- correlational study was conducted to assess the level of compliance with disaster preparedness and level of knowledge on response measures in Cluster 1 of the Schools Division of Antique. A duly validated researcher-made Questionnaire Checklist on Disaster Preparedness(QCDIP) and Multiple Choice Test on Response Measures (MCTRM) were utilized to collect data from the 357 randomly selected and proportionately distributed senior high school students among the 23 identified public secondary schools.
Statistical tests used to interpret the data were the frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation for descriptive statistics and the One Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Pearson's r for inferential statistics. Significance level for all inferential data were set at alpha 0.05 at two- tailed test.
Results of the study revealed that the level of compliance with disaster preparedness was Highly Compliant with an Average level of knowledge on response measures when both taken as an entire group and when grouped according to school size, school location, and students' strand.
There were significant differences on the level of compliance with disaster preparedness, and knowledge on response measures as to school size, school location, and students' strand. However, there was no significant relationship between level of compliance with disaster preparedness of the public secondary schools and level of knowledge on response measures of senior high school students of Cluster 1 in the Schools Division of Antique.
The study concluded that compliance with disaster preparedness is independent with knowledge on response measures. A highly compliant school does not correlate to a high acquisition of response measure knowledge. There are underlying factors and other external variables that might affect. School size, school location, and students' strand vary significantly on how these students perceived disaster in public secondary schools. The study recommended that DepEd with its DRRM subject would also be offered in other strands aside from STEM so as all students be further equip with knowledge on disaster preparedness with greater input on response measures hand in hand with the development and use of IEC to augment information regarding this area.
